The character of Kaya is shown to be incredibly sick when she is introduced in Netflix’s One Piece but why is she ill and does she die in the series?
*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for One Piece* — Episodes 3 and 4 of Netflix’s live-action One Piece series introduce viewers to Kaya, a wealthy young woman who is plagued by a mystery illness and has a suspiciously shifty butler, Klahadore, watching over her every move.
Why is Kaya sick in One Piece?
In the live-action One Piece series, Kaya has fallen ill as Klahadore (secretly a pirate captain named Kuro) and his cronies have been poisoning her to ensure that she stays sick and eventually kill her.
As the storyline continues, it becomes clear that Kuro has plans to steal Kaya’s fortune and the shipyard business that she inherited after her parents died at sea.
Not long after Kuro’s sinister motives are revealed, Nami asks Kaya if she only started to get sick after the creepy butler started working for her, and sure enough, that’s indeed the case.
This plot point serves as a significant change from the original manga and anime as Kaya’s illness was caused by her persistent worrying after her parents’ deaths and her constant anxiety, only made worse by Kuro’s presence, manifested itself as a physical illness and began to subside as she began to regain her confidence.
Does Kaya die in One Piece?
No, Kaya does not die in One Piece.
However, there are several close calls as Kuro turns violent after his true identity is revealed and he tries to kill Kaya and the Straw Hat crew using his bladed gloves.
Thankfully, Luffy manages to defeat Kuro and sends him flying out of a window while Zoro uses his swords to subdue Kuro’s cronies.
The gang part ways with Kaya at the end of episode 4 as she embarks on a journey to study to become a doctor.
We next see her briefly in episode 8, after Luffy finally gets his wanted poster, as Kaya is shown reacting to seeing the poster. As some time has now passed without Kuro as her butler, she is looking much healthier than when we first saw her.
She gives the Straw Hats their first ship
At the end of episode 4, after the Straw Hat crew helps to unearth Kuro’s sinister plans, Kaya rewards her newfound friends with a brand new ship.
Luffy names the vessel, which has a ram as its figurehead, the Going Merry after Kaya’s lifelong friend and her family’s lawyer, Merry, who was killed by Kuro.
It’s worth noting that Merry’s fate in the Netflix series differs from the manga and anime as Kuro doesn’t actually kill him with this change being implemented by the writers to up the emotional stakes of the episode.
The live-action One Piece is available to stream now on Netflix after setting sail on August 31, 2023.
