One of the most dramatic moments in season 3 of Sweet Magnolias is the shock resignation of Mayor Trent Lewis in light of the ongoing recall process against him but why exactly did he resign?
*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Sweet Magnolias season 3* — The Netflix series Sweet Magnolias may primarily be a romantic and family-based drama at its heart but that hasn’t stopped it from delving into the world of politics on occasion as the show’s titular trio have crossed swords with their town’s mayor. In episode 3 of the new season, Mayor Lewis makes the dramatic announcement that he is resigning but the revelation has left both viewers and Serenity residents with plenty of questions.
The recall petition against Mayor Lewis explained
The recall process against Serenity’s incumbent mayor began in season 2 after the Sweet Magnolias filed a petition against Trent Lewis.
Maddie, Dana Sue and Helen, as well as numerous other Serenity residents, had grown frustrated with the declining state of their town and the lack of progress being made by the mayor.
On top of Mayor Lewis’s poor governance during his 10-year stay in office, Trent also became suspected of misappropriating the town’s funds and property for his own personal gain and that of his wife, and the Sweet Magnolias’ nemesis, Mary Vaughn Lewis.
After the petition is filed against Mayor Lewis, his wife vows to take revenge and drags up Cal’s past arrest for assault and battery to get him fired from his job as Serenity High’s baseball coach.
Why did Mayor Lewis resign on Sweet Magnolias?
Mayor Lewis resigned in episode 3 in an effort to avoid the allegations against him being revealed to the public which could harm any future career prospects or even see him get arrested.
Rumors that Mayor Lewis has been embezzling public money had been rife and were part of the reason why the recall petition was brought against him in the first place, but they had never been formally investigated.
However, after the Sweet Magnolias filed their recall petition, Peggy Martin vowed not to hide any of the mayor’s secrets and began looking into his shady dealings.
Knowing that staying as Serenity’s mayor would keep the spotlight firmly on him, Trent decided that resigning and hurriedly moving to Castlewood would hopefully allow for the situation to cool off.
But Peggy has different ideas as she gets in touch with an old friend and celebrated investigative journalist, Charlies Perkins, to continue to explore Mayor Lewis’s questionable business.
Setting up season 4 election
As well as delivering some (literally) mic-drop-worthy drama in season 3, the mayoral controversy has left Serenity in need of a new mayor.
During an interview in episode 4, Helen suggests to Peggy that she should consider running as Mayor Lewis’s successor.
Helen follows this up in episode 10 with renewed vigor and even offers to run Peggy’s election campaign should she choose to run.
As this plot thread isn’t concluded by the end of Sweet Magnolias’ third season, it’s something we can expect to see explored in season 4 if Netflix gives the green light to another season.
On top of that, we should hopefully learn more about the former mayor’s fate as he has so far escaped without consequence after he and his family skipped town earlier in season 3.
Let’s see if Peggy’s close friend Charles can succeed in digging up enough dirt to have the book thrown at Trent Lewis.
Season 3 of Sweet Magnolias is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on Thursday, July 20, 2023.
