Singers Nancy Guaccero Ramistella and John Ramistella were born on November 7, 1942 in New York City, New York state – United States. John is of Italian descent. The family was originally from New York, but they later moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His father and uncle taught him to play guitar when he was 8 years old. In high school, the artist joined The Rockets, a band led by Dick Holler and wrote a number of hit songs like Abraham, Martin and John, the novelty song, and Snoopy vs. the Red Baron.

He formed his band, Spades when he was 14 years old. He attended Baton High School. Johnny Rivers joined Suede in early 1956. Alan Freed advised the singer to change his name to Johnny Rivers.
