The family was originally from New York, but they later moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His father and uncle taught him to play guitar when he was 8 years old. In high school, the artist joined The Rockets, a band led by Dick Holler and wrote a number of hit songs like Abraham, Martin and John, the novelty song, and Snoopy vs. the Red Baron.
