Where to Find (& Catch) Salamance in Pokémon Violet

Salamance was the ace Dragon-and Flying-type from Elite Four member Drake in the Hoenn Region, and can now be found through another difficult battle scenario in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet for players to catch. Salamance evolves from Bagon and Shelgon, two Dragon-types that are found in the wild spaces in the Paldea Region as exclusive pocket monsters to Pokémon Violet, particularly around Glaseado Mountain, Areas 1 and 3 in the South Province, East Province Area 3, West province Area 2, and the Alfornada Cavern. While players are certainly capable of training a Bagon into a Shelgon and Salamance at levels 30 and 50, respectfully, the powerful dragon exists outside traditional methods within the game as well.

Despite the limitations on Bagon and its evolutions to just Pokémon Violet, players of both versions can encounter Salamance by participating in Tera Raid Battles that feature the Pokémon. Tera Raids are similar to Max Raids from Pokémon Sword and Shield but emphasize the new Terastallization feature that transforms Pokémon into variants that defy their normal Typings. As a result, Tera Raids in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet feature Pokémon with abnormal strength and unique type matchups, leading to a more challenging battle that often requires players to be on a team of four through AI or multiplayer. Additionally, a normal or Tera Salamance cannot be caught in the wild, even in Pokémon Violet, where their previous forms are found, so players that want to obtain these special versions of the creature must engage with these Raids.

How To Catch Salamance in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Salamance appears in Tera Raid battles of five stars or higher, seen by players if they have a Nintendo Online subscription that lets them see these events on their map. Players need to have completed the main story of Pokémon Scarlet & Violet to unlock higher difficulty Raids, especially for Salamance, since only Bagon and Shelgon will appear in lower star events. Following the same format as other Raids, players will need to reduce Salamance’s HP to 0 before having the opportunity to catch it. Thankfully, the main struggle in fighting Salamance revolves around the sheer power of the Pokémon rather than a tricky obstacle created through an abnormal Tera type.

Although this might change for players depending on how Tera Raid Battles are updated in the future, Salamance typically appears with a Dragon-type Terastallization, which doubles the power of their already strong Dragon-type moves. Already a creature with ridiculous Speed and Attack stats that make it worthy of the pseudo-Legendary title, Salamance poses a threat to many Pokémon teams. However, similar to the upcoming Charizard Tera Raid in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the Dragon-type remains weak to Ice-type Pokémon, which becomes a 4x weakness for Salamnce due to its additional Flying-type, giving players a great chance to find and catch this rare beast.
