Monty and Sarah then moved to Hackney’s De Beauvoir Town district and created their first garden.

Monty and Sarah relocated to The Hanburies, a farm estate in Herefordshire, in 1989. The Prickotty Bush, Monty’s first novel, was about the development of the garden and the subsequent loss of the house due to the failing of their jewelry business.

They bought a house in Irvington, Herefordshire, in 1991 and began work on a new garden called Longmeadow.

When they bought the property, it was unfit to live in, so Monty’s family rented a house in Leominster that was riddled with vermin and had no heating while they worked on it.
