Tom Netherton was born on January 11, 1947 in Munich, Germany as Thomas Harold Netherton Jr. Lillian (Christensen) Netherton was his mother and Thomas, a United States Army officer, was his father. Due to his father’s military work, as a child he was constantly on the move. Upon his father’s retirement in 1961, they eventually moved to Bloomington, Minnesota.
Netherton then went to Bloomington High School. During his freshman year of high school, he and his friends challenged each other to audition for the school musical. He participated in the AFS intercultural program to gain a leadership position in the school’s international youth exchange organization, the American Field Service (AFS) Club. During his summer vacation, he spent time in Peru. After returning to Bloomington for his senior year, he was elected class president. He attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis to study architecture after graduating from high school in 1965.
