Survivor: 11 Memes That Perfectly Sum Up The Show

Survivor just wrapped up its 42nd season on May 25, 2022, and the winner has fans abuzz with discussion. The series has been going strong now for 22 years, following the same main format each time with new twists, turns, and elements added over the years. One of the latest twists is the “Shot in the Dark,” whereby a player who believes they will be voted out can choose to cash in a potential 50/50 chance Hail Mary they need to save themselves.

Fans who have watched the show from the beginning get all the inside references. New fans, meanwhile, don’t understand how the game was played way back when before splitting votes, immunity idols, and videos from home were a thing. Those who have never watched the show, meanwhile, can get the gist of it through a series of perfectly crafted memes.

Group Text

Group texts are popular nowadays, so using them is a perfect way to describe Survivor to a new generation of viewers. The feeling of being voted out of the tribe and game is similar to discovering that friends or family members have made a new group chat that includes all of the same people, with one exception.

It’s a tough pill to swallow for players who have forged alliances with others and believed they were safe. It’s also a big part of the reason why it’s so difficult to trust others in the game, and why players sometimes become paranoid.

Playing The Idol

One of the more recent twists on Survivor, and arguably one of the best, has been the Immunity Idol. Hidden throughout camp, often with clues that lead to their location, these are secretly found and kept. The player can pull them out at any Tribal Council before the votes are read and any votes made against them will not count.

So, it’s no surprise that when someone pulls out an Idol and no one suspected they had one, it leads to a lot of jaw drops at Tribal Council. It also means it will be an awkward situation back at camp when those who voted for that person need to face them.

Catching Fish

There always seems to be one player each season who seems to have a particular knack for competitions, building shelter, or sourcing food. Often the rest of the players marvel at this individual and how they can head into the water for a short time and come back with dinner. Meanwhile, other players try their best for hours and get nothing.

It’s all part of the game where different abilities, skills, strategies, and types of people have value in various ways. Sometimes a winner is smart and strategic and sometimes they are simply likable, athletic, and resourceful.

Toilet Paper, Please

One of the things fans never knew about life on Survivor is that the players don’t have access to toiletries like toilet paper. This means they have to find other ways to clean themselves, like using leaves for cleaning and twigs as toothbrushes.

This meme perfectly sums up how life on Survivor is really about those little wins, whether it’s a lighter or flint, a food reward, or even toilet paper. That said, toiletries have never been a reward on the show, but the meme captures the point.

Play All The Way

Many elements of Survivor are very real, so it’s not uncommon that players who come into the game with some extra weight or bulk leave much skinnier than when they started. They are often living on nothing but small amounts of rice, fish they can catch, and coconuts, unless they win a food challenge and get to indulge.

This meme jokes about the changed appearances by suggesting that players are put through such an ordeal that they come out looking hundreds of years older than they were before. This obviously isn’t the case, but the meme has a point.

Lies, Lies, Lies

Oftentimes during Tribal Council, host Jeff Probst will notice one player making a face or rolling their eyes while another is speaking, and he will instantly call on them to explain. This is usually because they don’t believe what the person is saying, or they think the person is trying to cover their tracks or project themselves to be someone other than who they are.

This face perfectly captures an exaggerated expression of that kind, which happens often on the show when one person in a tribe is on the way out and others are tired of listening to what they have to say.

Expected The Unexpected

“Expect the unexpected” is the tagline for another reality show, Big Brother. But occasionally, the unexpected happens on Survivor. Particularly in newer seasons, twists have been added to the game to shake things up and combat some of the predictability.

The funny thing about Survivor, Big Brother, and other long-running reality shows that try to introduce new elements to shock players, as this meme suggests, is that the players have now come to expect that there will be surprises.

The Tribe Has Spoken

The most iconic four words from the show, and one of Jeff Probst’s most relatable phrases on Survivor, “the tribe has spoken” defines everything about Survivor. People live as tribes on different parts of an island. When they have their scheduled meeting, everyone decides who they want to “vote off” the island, and thus out of the game. The person with the most votes goes home.

As depicted in the image, the moment is finalized when the host Jeff Probst snuffs out the flame from their torch. Because, as he says each time, “your fire represents your life in the game.”

Got Voted Out

Everyone has their own unique reaction to being voted out. Some are angry and bitter and call out other players on the way out. Some are upset at being blindsided but give respect to those who orchestrated the move since they know it’s all part of the game.

This meme uses Malcolm’s hilarious expression to suggest he’s reacting in a way that might be seen on other reality shows, like Real Housewives, and not on Survivor. No one has ever said this on the show, but it sure would be funny if they did.

Ow, My Back!

Fans sometimes forget that players are sleeping on the ground without a sleeping bag or any padding. When they finally build a shelter, it’s typically made of leaves and bamboo, so it’s not exactly comfortable.

This meme uses an iconic image of Britney Spears and references lyrics from the song “Oops, I Did It Again,” where she sings “My loneliness is killing me.” Except “loneliness” is cleverly and hilariously replaced by the words “lower back” to make it more Survivor-appropriate.

How To Win

Rupert was a fan favorite character when he first appeared on the show, but he became one of the Survivor players fans changed their minds about, according to Reddit, when he returned in subsequent seasons.

He never actually won the show, but the meme is designed to reference elements that seem to be common among many of the brawny white men who have: they made friends in the jury, typically using others to do their dirty work, and they were athletic enough to both win competitions and get food for the tribe. Rupert, however, is one of the few who loved to roar quite loudly during challenges as well.
