Florida’s Viera High School is currently facing an investigation following disturbing allegations of hazing, which came to light after a leaked video circulated online. As a result, all football activities have been suspended indefinitely, and the head coach of the football team, Shane Staples, has been fired in the wake of these allegations. Several players allegedly involved in the incident have also been suspended.
While the leaked video is no longer accessible online, reports from USA Today described the footage as depicting students engaged in actions simulating explicit acts. Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Mark Rendell unequivocally termed the incident as “hazing.”
In a statement released on August 21, 2023, Superintendent Rendell emphasized,
“Hazing, bullying, and intimidation have no place in Brevard Public Schools. We have spent the past several days investigating the hazing incident involving members of the Viera High football team.”
Following the emergence of the hazing incident, Shane Staples was relieved of his coaching duties as the investigation unfolds. Staples’ father clarified the situation, explaining that his son’s suspension is temporary and will continue until the investigation reaches its conclusion.
Shane Staples took up the role of Viera High School’s football coach in 2022. He assumed the position after the resignation of Chad Raymond. At the time of his appointment, Viera’s athletic director, Maggie Davis, expressed confidence in Staples, stating,
“Coach Staples has been an integral part of the success of this program and we are excited to watch him continue that legacy.”
Brevard Public Schools issued a statement on August 19, 2023, addressing the incident and assuring the community that an ongoing investigation is actively underway. The statement read, “There is an ongoing investigation into the actions of multiple students. Our focus is to work with district security and school-based administrators to complete a thorough investigation in a timely manner.”
Heather Legate, the principal of Viera High School, also weighed in on the leaked videos, emphasizing the priority of student safety. Legate underscored the commitment to transparency throughout the ongoing investigation, as the community awaits the outcome of the inquiry.
