Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have a definitive best order in which to complete all the Gyms, Titans, and Team Star Bosses. For the first time in the Pokémon franchise, Scarlet and Violet allow the player to complete the story in any order they want owing to the Paldea region’s open world design. But just because challenges can be tackled in any order, doesn’t mean they realistically should be.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have three story campaigns: Victory Road with eight Gyms, Path of Legends with five Titan Pokémon, and Starfall Street with five Team Star Bosses. All told, that’s 18 different challenges to overcome before facing the Elite Four and beating the game. To unlock the post-game as quickly as possible and save time not pointlessly running back-and-forth across the map, it’s best to look at the most optimal route through Scarlet and Violet’s stories.
Which Order You Should Beat Gyms In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
Victory Road is the standard Pokémon adventure, pitting the trainer against Gym Leaders to gain badges and eventually earn the right to take on the Elite Four. Badges also allow the trainer to catch and command higher level Pokémon, making them essential for accessing the later stages of the game. Victory Road therefore feels like the primary quest to tackle in Paldea – but to defeat each of Scarlet and Violet‘s Gym Leaders requires good basic knowledge of type advantages and grinding to level up. The best order to take on the Gyms is based on the level of the Gym Leaders’ Pokémon.
- Katy at the Cortondo Gym – level 14-15 Bug-type Pokémon
- Brassius at the Artazon Gym – level 16-17 Grass-type Pokémon
- Iono at the Levincia Gym – level 23-24 Electric-type Pokémon
- Kofu at the Cascarrafa Gym – level 29-30 Water-type Pokémon
- Larry at the Medali Gym – level 35-36 Normal-type Pokémon
- Ryme at the Montenevera Gym – level 41-42 Ghost-type Pokémon
- Tulip at the Alfornada Gym – level 44-45 Psychic-type Pokémon
- Grusha at the Glaseado Gym – level 47-48 Ice-type Pokémon
Which Order You Should Beat Titans In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
Path of Legends is a quest designed to replace the HMs of previous games. Upon defeating each of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet‘s Titan Pokémon, Herba Mystica is awarded to the player, which can upgrade their Legendary Pokémon (Koraidon for Scarlet, Miraidon for Violet). With these mobility improvements, the entire map can be traversed more easily and certain inaccessible spots become open for exploration. By far the most useful of these abilities are Swimming and Climbing, but Climbing can’t be obtained until quite late in the game. While it may be possible to use type advantages to beat the Titan Pokémon, going in ascending level order is still the best plan.
- Stony Cliff Titan (Klawf) in South Province (Area Three) – level 16 Rock-type Pokémon
- Open Sky Titan (Bombirdier) in West Province (Area One) – level 19 Flying-type Pokémon
- Lurking Steel Titan (Orthworm) in East Province (Area One) – level 28 Steel-type Pokémon
- Quaking Earth Titan (Great Tusk in Scarlet or Iron Treads in Violet) in Asado Desert – level 44 Ground-type Pokémon
- False Dragon Titan (Dondozo and Tatsugiri) in Casseroya Lake – level 55 Dragon-type Pokémon
Which Order You Should Beat Team Star Bosses In Scarlet & Violet
Starfall Street is the spiritual successor to the villain team side quests of previous Pokémon games, like Team Rocket and Team Plasma. Taking down each Team Star Base involves releasing three Pokémon into Let’s Go mode and battling through trainers to reach the Team Star Boss. These bosses may be delinquent students, but they have enough firepower to rival any Gym Leader. Defeating Scarlet and Violet‘s Team Star Bosses allows TMs to be crafted at Pokémon Centers and brings the player one step closer to uncovering the mysterious identity of Cassiopeia. Starfall Street is the hardest mission on average, so facing Team Star in level order is the wisest option.
- Team Star Dark Crew led by Giacomo in West Province (Area One) – level 20-21 Dark-type Pokémon
- Team Star Fire Crew led by Mela in East Province (Area One) – level 26-27 Fire-type Pokémon
- Team Star Poison Crew led by Atticus in Tagtree Thicket – level 32 Poison-type Pokémon
- Team Star Fairy Crew led by Ortega in North Province (Area Three) – level 50-51 Fairy-type Pokémon
- Team Star Fighting Crew led by Eri in North Province (Area One) – level 55-56 Fighting-type Pokémon
Best Order For Beating All Gyms, Titans, & Team Star Bosses
As covered already, the best order for proceeding through Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s story missions is based on the level of the Pokémon involved in each quest. However, the layout of these challenges on the map also play a role in determining the best path to traverse. Overall, all three story quests will see the player heading to the north-east first, then doubling back and proceeding north-west around Area Zero (the void in the middle of the Paldea’s map).
There are a few twists to this formula that either avoid unnecessary backtracking or account for high-level opponents. The Team Star Fire Crew is close to the Levincia Gym and is best tackled on the way back to the south of the map as they’re not too highly-leveled. The Alfornada Gym requires shooting back down to the south of Scarlet and Violet‘s Paldea region map after significant leveling-up in the north. Finally, the False Dragon Titan should be tackled last as it is in an odd, out-of the way location. With these twists, the best route appears as below.
Order | Challenge | Opponent | Type | Level | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Cortondo Gym | Katy | Bug | 14-15 | Cortondo |
2 | Stony Cliff Titan | Klawf | Rock | 16 | South Province (Area Three) |
3 | Artazon Gym | Brassius | Grass | 19 | Artazon |
4 | Levincia Gym | Iono | Electric | 23-24 | Levincia |
5 | Team Star Fire Crew | Mela | Fire | 26-27 | East Province (Area One) |
6 | Open Sky Titan | Bombirdier | Flying | 19 | West Province (Area One) |
7 | Team Star Dark Crew | Giacomo | Dark | 20-21 | West Province (Area One) |
8 | Cascarrafa Gym | Kofu | Water | 29-30 | Cascarrafa |
9 | Lurking Steel Titan | Orthworm | Steel | 28 | East Province (Area One) |
10 | Team Star Poison Crew | Atticus | Poison | 32 | Tagtree Thicket |
11 | Medali Gym | Larry | Normal | 35-36 | Medali |
12 | Montenevera Gym | Ryme | Ghost | 41-42 | Montenevera |
13 | Quaking Earth Titan | Great Tusk/ Iron Treads | Ground | 44 | Asado Desert |
14 | Alfornada Gym | Tulip | Psychic | 44-45 | Alfornada |
15 | Glaseado Gym | Grusha | Ice | 47-48 | Glaseado |
16 | Team Star Fairy Crew | Ortega | Fairy | 50-51 | North Province (Area Three) |
17 | Team Star Fighting Crew | Eri | Fighting | 55-56 | North Province (Area One) |
18 | False Dragon Titan | Dondozo/ Tatsugiri | Dragon | 55 | Casseroya Lake |
The open world design of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Paldea location is brilliant, truly allowing the player to explore at their own pace and tackle the main story quests in any order they wish. However, the levels of opponents’ Pokémon puts a necessary restriction on total freedom, and the need to obtain badges to command higher level Pokémon still primarily routes the player through the Victory Road quest. For that reason, it’s sometimes best to stick to this most optimal path for the main story of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
