He is best known for the Netflix comedy special Mo Amer: The Vagabond and as one-third of the Allah Made Me Funny comedy trilogy. Mohammed Amer was born on July 24, 1981 in Kuwait as Mohammed “Mo” Mustafa Amer. His nationality is Kuwaiti-American, and he is of Palestinian descent, so his ethnicity is Mixed. He is the youngest child in a family of six siblings. As a result, he has five siblings. His father worked for the Kuwait Oil Company as an engineer. Amer, his sister Haifa, brother and mother fled Kuwait during the Gulf War in October 1990, when he was 9 years old. They immigrated to the US and settled in Houston, Texas. His father, a telecommunications engineer, went with them to the United States in 1992.

Amer attended Piney Point Primary School while his brothers studied abroad. His father died in 1995 when he was 14 years old. Omar, one of his brothers, was a pilot, and Amer (later changed his surname to Najjar) had a doctorate in biochemistry. As of 2022, he is 41 years old.

He became a US citizen in 2009, allowing him to travel to Palestine and see family he hasn’t seen in nearly 20 years. He also visited Kuwait and Baghdad for the first time since fleeing with his family.
