We sadly announce the death of Levi Walker Jr., who played the renowned mascot “Chief Noc-A-Homa” for the Atlanta Braves from 1969 until 1985.
On Friday, November 24, 2023, Walker departed from this life after enduring multiple health issues associated with diabetes and continuous dialysis.
Walker became a fan favorite and an essential part of the Atlanta Braves identity thanks to his captivating rendition of the well-known Native American tribal chief, Chief Noc-A-Homa.
Whether leading applause or breaking into his signature dance, his energy and excitement filled the stadium with a vibe that everyone who witnessed it will never forget.
Walker had major health issues in the last few years. He was sent to the emergency room on July 25 and was later diagnosed with metabolic encephalopathy.
Since then, he has been having moments of disorientation. Walker’s fortitude never wavered in the face of hardship, mirroring the fortitude he showed when serving as Chief Noc-A-Homa.
Gwyn, his daughter, has been a constant source of support for him throughout his medical journey, going so far as to organize an online fundraising to aid with the mounting costs.
His care has come at an exorbitant expense, which includes transportation for his three weekly dialysis sessions and home medical supplies.
Walker was given some support by the VA as a veteran, but the need was much greater than the supply.
For the Atlanta Braves and their supporters, the passing of Levi Walker Jr. signals the end of an era. We will always remember his contributions to the team, Atlanta, and the baseball community.
