Leandro Lo A Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Legend Was Shot To Death

On Sunday, Leandro Lo, eight-time Brazilian Jiu Jitsu champion, was fatally shot at a concert in Sao Paolo, Brazil. The 33-year-old went to see a popular Sao Paolo musical group perform at the Sirio club in South Sao Paolo early that morning. During the performance, Lo got into a fight with an on-duty police officer, Henrique Otávio Oliveira Velozo, who was also present. According to Sao Paolo police, after a brief altercation between Leandro Lo and Velozo, the police are said to have shot down the Brazilian Jiu Jiu icon. Authorities have not officially determined the cause of the scuffle, but witnesses at the scene say Lo was trying to appease the officer.

UFC commentator and former lightweight Kenny Florian expressed grief over Lo’s death on Twitter in response to the incident. Henrique Velozo was arrested shortly after this event. The situation is still under investigation.

According to Flograppling, Sao Paolo’s Leandro Lo is one of three Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) athletes to have won eight IBJJF world championships. He burst onto the international BJJ scene when he won his first world championship in lightweight in 2012. Lo’s most recent victory was on May 22 in lightweight. Lo is considered a hard worker, entering multiple weight classes and winning the light, medium and heavyweight divisions of the Copa Podio Grand Prix.

According to witnesses, Velozo is said to have snatched a bottle when the disagreement turned violent. This caused Lo to tie him up with a BJJ hand buckle. The audience at the nightclub clearly interfered at this point. However, after escaping from Lu’s grip. Velozo allegedly pulled out a pistol and shot a BJJ opponent in the head.

Lo was taken to the hospital after gunfire and was pronounced dead. Velozo is said to have fled the scene before being apprehended by officials in Sao Paolo. During the investigation, he has now been suspended from work.
