Garoppolo, who was represented in the 2014 NFL Draft by Don Yee, was seen to be one of the most promising quarterback prospects available. He was the first player from the Football Championship Subdivision to be drafted in 2014, and the New England Patriots selected him with the 62nd overall pick in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Garoppolo made his first appearance in a game during the Patriots’ regular season for the first time in the fourth quarter of the Patriots’ road defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4 in 2014. The 2016 campaign
Garoppolo was named the starting quarterback for the first game of the 2016 season by head coach Bill Belichick as a result of starting quarterback Tom Brady being suspended by the league for four games for the Deflategate scandal. It was expected that Garoppolo would stand in for Brady for all four games during Brady’s suspension. In the first game of the season, a 23–21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Garoppolo threw for 24 touchdowns and completed 24 of 33 passes for 264 yards. During Week 2’s game against the Miami Dolphins, he threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns before suffering a shoulder injury that forced him out of the game in the second quarter of the 31–24 victory. After taking a hit from the Dolphins’ linebacker Kiko Alonso, he damaged his AC joint, which forced him to miss the following two games. As a result, the starting role went to the rookie Jacoby Brissett until Tom Brady came back from his suspension in Week 5. Although he was on the field for the Patriots’ 34–28 overtime triumph over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, he did not play in the game. He was the lone Patriot who did not participate in the game.

Garoppolo was the subject of numerous trade speculations over the offseason, with the Chicago Bears and the Cleveland Browns being listed most regularly as prospective suitors. In the end, however, no deal took place, and Garoppolo stayed with the Patriots heading into the season.
