Bizarre ‘Algerian gorilla fish’ goes viral
An image of a man holding a giant ‘Algerian gorilla fish’ has gone viral on all major social media platforms, including TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter.
The picture blew out of proportion after Instagram user @therealtarzann, who has an impressive fan base of 6.7 million followers on the app, reposted the image.
“What a great photo of this Algerian gorilla fish. This is an adult male they usually get about 3-4 ft but this guy was eating baby whales this winter and had fully maxed out in size!” the content creator wrote in the post.
“They lay 34 eggs on land and during mating season turn bright red to attract females!” They travel in packs only in September when El Niño is at maximum velocity ..they can live up to 13 years old but if they are circumcised they can live up to 48!”
Here’s the viral post that has captured millions of people’s imaginations right now:
Is the creature real?
The “Algerian gorilla fish” seems very unlikely to be a real creature in the sea and the picture doesn’t seem genuine to us.
The picture went viral on Facebook and Twitter where some users claimed that the supposed creature was found in Carli Bay, a Bay in Couva, Central Trinidad.
The original image seems to have been posted by musician Raw Nitro on Facebook who claimed the fish was caught on April 15.
The comment section of the post is filled with users stating that the picture is very likely to be generated by an AI app or simply edited using a graphic editing tool like Photoshop.
Moreover, it appears that people started referring to the creature as an ‘Algerian gorilla fish’ after one Twitter user wrote: “Thats an Algeria Gorilla Fish. They usually reside in the nearby rivers’ beds during the warmer climates to mate. This is the first photograph I’ve seen of one this big as they’re usually 3-4ft long. Must be from the climate shifts. Also, I just made this s**t up.”
A quick search on the internet will show you a number of similar AI-generated images or photoshopped pictures.

Users don’t believe image is genuine
It’s safe to say that a number of social media users aren’t convinced that the image is real and have filled several platforms with video reactions and tweets.
Under the Instagram post above, one user commented: “We went right to Google cause I was like ‘Nah’ we don’t think this is real.”
“Yes and this fish’s daddy was King Kong and his mother was Little Mermaid,” another one joked.
A third one added: “I’m really hoping these comments stop me from googling what I know is some fake facts.”
