In 2018, Lauren Kanarek began training with former Olympic equestrian Michael Barisone. In the end, Kanarek paid $5,000 a month to train, ride, and live with her boyfriend, Rob Goodwin, at Barisone’s horse ranch.

Michael Barisone is one of the best dressed racers in the country, representing Team USA at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. He has become a highly respected coach who has coached Olympic athletes and top level racers.
But his life began to spiral out of control in the summer of 2019 when his relationship with Kanarek fell apart because of disagreements over their arrangements.

On the afternoon of August 7, 2019, Michael Barisone took this 9mm Ruger pistol out of the safe in his office, then drove to the ranch on the property where Lauren Kanarek and Rob Goodwin lived.

Lauren Kanarek said that Michael Barisone was hiding behind a bush near the porch, then, unaware that he had a gun, she approached him. She said she started talking to him when he suddenly raised his gun and shot her twice.
Rob Goodwin said he was on the porch after seeing Barisone shoot Kanarek. He said that Barisone tried to shoot him next, but missed.

Rob Goodwin said he was able to pin Michael Barisone to the ground.
Lauren Kanarek called 911 in critical condition and was not breathing. When the first officer arrived, he found Goodwin lying on top of Barisone, who had been brutally beaten as shown in the hospital photo after the shooting.

Michael Barisone’s trial began in the spring of 2022, more than two years after the shooting.
The trial drew a nationwide audience and lasted nearly three weeks. His defense team claims Michael Barisone was temporarily insane at the time of the shooting.
This was a bold move by his lawyers, as madness rarely worked. But after four days of deliberation, the jury found Michael Barisone innocent by reason of insanity.
Lauren Kanarek still wants accountability

Lauren Kanarek’s father said Lauren was “shocked and dismayed” by the verdict. She is fighting in civil court, hiring a lawyer to sue Michael Barisone on her behalf.
Lauren has started riding again after a long journey of surgery and treatment.
Michael Barisone’s Next Steps

Following the sentence, Michael Barisone was transferred to a psychiatric facility.
On September 7, 2022, Barisone underwent a trial, looking different from the trial with his shaved face and short hair.
The judge ordered Barisone to be transferred to a less restrictive psychiatric hospital for treatment. He will have another hearing in six months to check his progress.
