How to use Depth Effect in iOS 16 as cool wallpaper feature goes viral

iOS 16 is here and everyone is everyone is talking about one new feature.

There are some amazing additions to Messages, Safari, Siri, Maps, Accessibility, Camera and so much more, but the best changes come to the Lock Screen.

For the first time ever, Apple has made iPhone users’ Lock Screens fully customisable with colours, filters, fonts and tools that make your wallpaper look really cool.

Lots of people are raving about one particular feature called Depth Effect, but what is it? And how do you use it? Read on to find out…

Depth Effect is the coolest feature in iOS 16

Depth Effect, or Multilayered Photo Effect as Apple also calls it, is a wallpaper tool that’s part of iOS 16’s Lock Screen customisation.

Previously, there weren’t many ways you could change your wallpaper. You had to choose one photo and the date and time appeared on top, often blocking out faces and other key parts of the image.

However, with iOS 16, that’s not a problem anymore as Depth Effect adds depth to your photo, bringing certain parts forward and others back.

The feature dynamically displays the wallpaper image so the subject stands out and appears in front of the date and time.

How to use Depth Effect on an iPhone

  • Light up your iPhone and long press anywhere on the Lock Screen.
  • Then, tap the blue + icon in the bottom right-hand corner.
  • Choose the photo you want to use as your wallpaper.
  • Tap the three dots at the bottom and press Depth Effect.
  • Now close the customisation section and the feature will be applied.

The effect only works when there are no Widgets on the screen, so you’ll have to sacrifice your Widgets if you want to use the Depth Effect. It also doesn’t seem to work if you’ve got an iPhone X.

Other ways to customise your Lock Screen

With iOS 16, there are loads of different ways to customise your wallpaper and Lock Screen including changing the style of the date and time.

There are plenty of font styles and colour choices that allow you to edit the way it looks to suit your style, and that’s not all.

You can add filters and styles to your wallpaper directly within the customisation section without having to use an editing app, and there is a whole collection of wallpapers to choose from.

This includes dynamic astronomy themed Lock Screens, ones based on your favourite emoji, colour gradients and much more.

Plus, you can set a series of photos that will shuffle automatically, and you can create multiple screens and switch between them throughout the day.
