Apple’s AirPods Pro have removable silicon ear tips designed to create a seal in the wearer’s ear canal, but how can users be sure their earbuds are creating the best seal in their ear? Apple takes the guesswork out of the equation with the Ear Tip Fit Test, a software tool that uses the AirPods’ sensors to determine just that. Considering that the AirPods Pro have noise cancelation features, including Transparency Mode and Adaptive Transparency Mode, creating a good seal is of the utmost importance. Since AirPods measure the noise levels both inside and outside the wearer’s ear, the seal helps noise cancelation work properly.
Apple’s second-generation AirPods come with four sizes of silicon ear tips in the box – extra small, small, and large. However, the first-generation model only has a small and large size included. On both generations, the medium size is pre-installed on the AirPods Pro right out of the box. To find the right fit, first figure out which size feels best in the ear. Then, place the AirPods Pro in the ear and connect to an iPhone or iPad. The Ear Tip Fit Test requires iOS 13.2, so older or outdated devices may not have access to the feature.
How To Take The Test & Swap Ear Tips
After the AirPods are connected and placed in the ear, navigate to the AirPods settings menu on an iPhone or iPad. On iOS 16 or later, AirPods settings appear in the main menu directly under the user’s Apple ID settings. On earlier versions of iOS, the AirPods settings are found under the device’s Bluetooth settings. Once inside the AirPods settings menu, tap the ‘Ear Tip Fit Test’ button to start the test.

Apple says that the test should be conducted in a quiet environment to get the best results. While the test is ongoing, users will hear a brief selection of music. Then, they’ll receive the results — either a green ‘Good Seal’ result or a yellow ‘Adjust Or Try A Different Ear Tip’ reading. Users who receive the latter result should try again before sizing up or down to try to find the right fit.
To choose the right ear tip — especially after unboxing the AirPods Pro — peel back the silicon edge of the ear tip to reveal an embossed size marking. Remove an ear tip by pulling it firmly from the base of the ear tip, and insert a new one by lining up the oval-shaped connectors and pushing it in firmly. Apple reminds users that they might need different size ear tips for their left and right ears, if the ear canal shape is different on each ear. Finding the right ear tip for AirPods Pro can be tricky, but the Ear Tip Fit Test can provide tangible insights into the earbuds’ fit.
