Is It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia renewed for season 17?
Yes, it was announced after season 14 in December 2020 that It’s Always Sunny was officially renewed for four more seasons.
That means we not only have a seventeenth season locked in but an eighteenth too.
Renewals like this are somewhat unheard of, so it’s clear that the network is incredibly confident in the show’s performance and streaming partnerships.
‘I remember really believing that we had something’
Rob McElhenney (who plays Mac) previously addressed the It’s Always Sunny crew’s hopes for its longevity back when it first started.
“…Our knee-jerk reaction used to be that we never anticipated anything like this,” he explained to Rolling Stone. “But the truth of the matter is, we were pretty confident at the time.
“I remember really believing that we had something we thought was pretty special. At least it was different than anything else that we had seen on TV. And most important, it was something we wanted to see on TV. So we felt like we had a shot. Now that could have just been the ignorance of youth.”
He continued to explain: “And the bravado of having zero experience in that field, and not really realizing how hard it is. But we felt pretty good.”
