There are over 20 different animals to discover in Final Fantasy XIV’s Island Sanctuary. These can be raised as loyal pets, and even help in workshop production by shedding or growing materials. However, many of them are rare breeds that can only be found during certain portions of the day.
Even if an animal is found, players will need adequate room to keep pets. When first unlocking Final Fantasy XIV Island Sanctuary one can only raise up to five animals. However, with new rank level-ups, this will increase to 10, and then a second time to 20.
While most animals can be found and caught before reaching max Final Fantasy XIV Island Sanctuary rank 10, it can be a bit troublesome getting to them in time. Instead, once at level 10 players can learn flying, allowing one to reach destinations faster. This way, an animal won’t be missed due to limited movement options.
Animal Restraints
Animals can be caught by crafting one of three Island Sanctuary restraints. Which one is required to capture an animal depends on the animal’s size. Some require mid-rank items like Final Fantasy XIV copper ore, which can be found by crafting new tools. All restraints will break after a single use requiring multiple copies to be crafted.
Trap Name | Island Rank | Animal Size | Materials |
|---|---|---|---|
Makeshift Net | 1 | Small | 1 Island Branch, 2 Island Vines |
Makeshift Restraint | 6 | Medium | 3 Island Hemp, 1 Island Copper |
Makeshift Soporific | 8 | Large | 2 Island Lavender, 1 Island Sap, 2 Island Jellyfish |
Common Animals
A reasonable amount of animals are always roaming around the Island Sanctuary. However, because restraint creation is linked to rank, players can only catch smaller animals when first unlocking Final Fantasy XIV Island Sanctuary. Still, despite the size difference each animal still occupies the same amount of space.

Summary: Final Fantasy 14 (Final Fantasy XIV) is the fourteenth entry in the Final Fantasy franchise. It is an MMORPG that initially launched in 2010 before it was completely rebuilt from the ground up for a 2013 release as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. After the events of the 2010 iteration’s conclusion, where the primal dragon Bahamut brings calamity to the land of Eorza, the player survives and is sent into the future by five years in a world that has begun to rebuild, but now thrust into the middle of a war from the Garlean Empire. As a consistently expanding world with an ever-scaling storyline, Final Fantasy XIV’s narrative grows with each expansion, with the core experience still surrounding working with other players and NPCs as they level and customize their characters, engage in real-time events, and coordinate teams to enter massive dungeons to face raid bosses. The game is available to play with people of several nations and has a massive translatable vocabulary for players to be able to work with one another despite language barriers. The most recent expansion pack, Endwalker, was released in December of 2021 and follows the trend of each title releasing roughly every two years. Final Fantasy XIV is available as a free-to-play title up to level 60, where the game then transitions to a subscription model. The game is playable on Microsoft Windows, macOS, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, as the PlayStation 3 version was shuttered in 2017.
