Alfred Molina hints at future of detective drama

We all love a good detective drama to sink out teeth into and one of Prime Video’s latest series, Three Pines, looks set to be the perfect dish to satisfy our murder mystery appetites.

Starring Alfred Molina, the series centers on the empathetic and astute Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and follows his crime-fighting exploits in the idyllic rural region of Quebec, Canada.

As each case of the murder mystery series slowly edges us towards its finale, attention is beginning to turn towards whether Three Pines will return to Prime Video for season 2.

What is Three Pines about?

Three Pines premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, December 2, 2022.

Based on the series of novels by author Louise Penny, the series follows Chief Inspector Armand Gamache as he is brought in to investigate a series of cases in the picturesque Quebec village of Three Pines.

Despite its idyllic and beguiling location, the town has recently been plagued by a string of grim murders and Gamache and his team must work to win over the eccentric residents in order to uncover the dark secrets hidden beneath the surface.

But as well as having to solve the seemingly never-ending string of murders, there is an ongoing case that haunts Gamache in the form of a young indigenous girl whose disappearance has not been properly investigated.

Alfred Molina hints at the possibility of Three Pines season 2

As Three Pines’ first season is still ongoing, Amazon has yet to officially give the green light to a second season of the detective drama.

However, the series’ lead actor Alfred Molina has already teased that there are plans in place for Three Pines season 2.

Speaking to Broadcast earlier in 2022, the actor hinted that more episodes are on the horizon.

“It’s character-driven as opposed to event-driven,” the actor said. “I’ve read some scripts and we’re pushing Gamache’s character a little bit further [in future episodes].”

Molina also went on to add: “He’s [Gamache] the best part I’ve had in television, because of all his contradictions. He’s a man of taste, but I think he’s a bit of a snob.

“He seems to have infinite patience with people who aren’t quite doing exactly what he needs them to do, but also takes the time to point out where they’re going wrong.”

There’s plenty of source material to work from

While Amazon has yet to officially announce a second season of Three Pines, there is one factor that stands the series in good stead for renewal.

That is the fact that Louise Penny’s Gamache novel series features a whopping 18 books which means that there should be no shortage of source material for the show’s writers to work from.

However, as we’ve seen in season 1, Three Pines’ writers have already created their own mysteries for Armand Gamache to solve as only one of the four mysteries shares a title with one of Penny’s novels, The Cruellest Month.
