Britannica notes that King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain financed Columbus’ voyage. However, the explorer was a native of Genoa, Italy.

As per The Conversation, the earliest known Columbus Day celebration was on October 12th, 1792.
However, over the years, the day also come to be known as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. In 1990, South Dakota became the first state to officially recognize the day. Soon after, more states including the District of Columbia recognized Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
It is meant to remember the horrors the natives of the land suffered due to America’s colonization.
In a White House press release in 2021, President Joe Biden wrote that the Ingenious People’s day is meant to honour the “Indigenous peoples’ resilience and strength as well as the immeasurable positive impact that they have made on every aspect of American society.”
